MediaMarkt is cooperating with Uber to offer “immediate delivery” within a 90-minute window in many major cities. Our experience after a test in Berlin: It has its pitfalls – but when it works, it’s brilliant.

Immediate delivery in the test: ordering with obstacles

We didn’t give up and found a model. But the next disappointment followed: The notebook, which was actually shown as being available for delivery via Uber, suddenly disappeared from MediaMarkt shortly after the order was placed canceled. “Product out of stock.” Great, there seems to be an error in the system. But we didn’t give up, and that turned out to be a good idea. Because the next notebook on our list was actually delivered. And that was almost magical.

Speed: Instead of 90 minutes, just half an hour!
Not just that We were able to accurately track the product on its way to our office, the time window was even significantly undercut. Fabulous 30 minutes it took between clicking order and delivery by the friendly Uber driver Ibrahim.

No Prime shipping can keep up with that and it was even faster than rushing to the nearest MediaMarkt (Berlin Alexanderplatz) and back to the office (Torstraße 49). The 4.99 euros shipping costs it’s definitely worth it to me. After all, subway tickets there and back, a trip by car or regular shipping from many online shops are similarly expensive.
MediaMarkt definitely still has some catching up to do transparencyWhich items can be ordered via Uber and which cannot – I would like to see a filter function in categories and search results pages. At least there is a small overview of products on MediaMarkt’s information page that can be delivered with immediate delivery.
Maybe we were just unlucky – but seeing a product listed as available only to have it canceled is a frustration that will deter many from ordering through Uber again. Something like this shouldn’t happen, especially not with the first order.

But: If it works, turbo shipping is brilliant and a saving grace. This is where MediaMarkt can really leverage its advantage of the dense branch network in Germany – even Amazon Prime can’t come close. I will definitely use the service more often in the future.
