The Taliban are seen as the descendants of Mullah Omar’s movement, but in reality very different. Much water has flowed under the bridges and few of the Taliban at the time are still alive. Many ethnic groups and tribes that had little to do with the Taliban in the past are now an integral part of it. Their current leader, Haibatullah Akhund, 60, hails from the south like the legendary Mullah Omar, but has no history as a fighter.
