Africa can develop through sport ~ Mondoblog

Bonjour,

Welcome to this special edition of the African Football Cup of Nations. The 34th edition of the largest sporting competition on the African continent is currently taking place in Ivory Coast.

In this newsletter, mondobloggers return to hot topics:

– social and political unrest in Haiti,
– the disenchantment of the Malian population with the action of the military at the head of the country,
– polarization in societal debates,
– the death of two students during demonstrations in Senegal.

In this edition of the newsletter, also find the announcement of the Mondoblog competition for the year 2024. This is the 11th recruitment session for new bloggers, which is open until March 1st.

The two Mondoblog Audio of the day are also devoted on the one hand to the representations that baobabs carry in traditional African societies and on the other hand to the horrors of the inhabitants of the houses with tin roofs.

Good reading and good listening !

🔎 FEATURED ARTICLE

⚽️ #Sport #Development – CAN 2023 ended with the victory of Ivory Coast, which organized the tournament. A competition which punctuated the African continent for a month. Football in Africa is sometimes accused of being nothing more than a distraction that distracts people from more pressing challenges. The Cameroonian Fabrice FOUDA do not share this opinion. For the blogger, football has real added value. Because between the schools built by footballers, the job creations and the infrastructural projects, football is more than a game and sets in its wake the milestones of development.

💬 WORDS OF THE BLOGGER

« In Africa, when a couple is on the verge of breaking up, loved ones often advocate for total reconciliation, invoking the famous “for the good of the children”. But it is sometimes imperative to give up in order to protect each other from the worst, especially “for the good of the children”. »

🌟 THE NUGGETS OF THE FORTEEN

#Unrest #Haiti – The political situation in Haiti is not improving. The start of 2024 is marked by demonstrations and the blockade of certain districts of the capital Port-au-Prince. Desperate young people pound the tarmac, demanding another direction for the future than the disastrous one promised to them. Faced with these continuing political unrest and social instability, Marc Sony RICOT disillusioned…

#Disenchantment #Mali – Like Niger and Burkina Faso, Mali has decided to distance itself from France and more generally from the former imperialist powers. Today, living in Bamako very often means hearing patriotic speeches. Khaled MOHAMED nevertheless notes that the promises of the new leaders are difficult to come true. The blogger returns, among other things, to the endless power cuts that Bamako is experiencing, the rate of which has not decreased since the military came to power.
🔗 The situation is serious

#Choice #HumanitiesIn France, recent months have been filled with brutal opposition speeches. Are you left or right? Are you native or are you an immigrant? Are you pro-Palestinian or pro-Israeli? Do you eat organic or do you find fruits and vegetables too expensive? Proof, if any were needed, that we live in an era where Manichaeism is king. A moment in history where there are no more gray areas and everyone is required to choose a side. The Russian blogger Kristina BERKUT explains and demonstrates that, however, each individual is a palette of identities.
🔗 Mirror, tell me who I am

#Food #Belgium – Philippe is a baker. He has always made his bread in the traditional way, with products from small producers in his region. One day, he bought a sandwich in a snack bar like the ones he has everywhere in Liège. He goes home and weighs the goods. It costs €27 per kilo. It therefore costs more than its own products. A height for Tanguy WERA. The Belgian blogger recalls that one of the manufacturers’ promises is to make food cheaper. At least, less expensive than that produced by hand.

#Protests #Senegal – February 9, Alpha Time TOUNKARA lost his life on the campus of Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, Senegal. A loss that shocked the entire student community. This is especially true since it is the second student to die in the demonstrations following the decision of President Macky SALL to postpone the holding of the presidential election which was to be held on February 25. Fatima SOW is outraged by this indiscriminate violence which is causing numerous victims among young people and students.

🎙️ PODCAST : MONDOBLOG AUDIO

THE Mondoblog Audio (MA) are sound clips that take blog articles from written to spoken. Every week, the Mondoblog team invites a mondoblogger to read one of its articles by recording on their phone. His blog is thus highlighted in the form of a column, halfway between an audio book and a mood post. Find all the Mondoblog Audio on the Youtube channel the RFI.

Baobabs have a particular resonance in the memory ofOmaw BUAME. These large trees were part of the blogger’s childhood. They were both close when he went to pick what we call “monkey bread”, and far away when they became forbidden places because they became the place of ritual, occult ceremonies…

Roger MAWULOLO, who lives in Dakar but sometimes has the opportunity to travel to West and Central Africa, talks to us with mischief about tin roofs… and their holes. The inhabitants of these homes are called resourceful and must learn to plug the gaps that appear in their roof. Under penalty of being exposed to bad weather.
