(LaPresse) Burmese forces have carried out a raid on the village of Kanan, in the Sagaing region of northwestern Myanmar. At least 17 people were killed, including nine children, while 20 others were injured. The area is controlled by pro-democracy rebels who oppose the Burmese military regime. The video released by AP shows the damage suffered by a series of buildings due to the air attack that, according to locals, hit the village of Kanan on the morning of Sunday 7 January. A local resident who helped with the rescue operation told the AP that a fighter jet dropped three bombs. The victims were located in buildings near the village school. The resident spoke on condition of anonymity because he fears being arrested by the Burmese military. Kanan is located about 280 kilometers northwest of Mandalay, the country’s second largest city. The military government has denied responsibility, claiming it was fake news spread by Khit Thit Media, an independent online news service sympathetic to the anti-military resistance. Myanmar is ravaged by violence, which began after the army ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. After peaceful demonstrations were bloodily repressed, many opponents of the military government took up arms and most of the country is now involved in a bloody civil war. (LaPresse)
