Iraq vs Jordan clash in the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup. The duel was held at the Khalifa International Stadium, Monday (29/1/2024) evening WIB.

Jordan took a 1-0 lead in the first half through Yazan Al-Naimat’s goal before halftime. Several Jordanian players celebrated the goal with celebrations like eating together on the sidelines.

Irak equalized in the 68th minute through a goal from Saad Natiq. The Lions of Mesopotamia turned 2-1 ahead eight minutes later through Aymen Hussein’s shot.

Hussein celebrated by sitting cross-legged with his hands like a person eating in the field. This style was allegedly used to respond to goal celebrations Jordan.

Unfortunately for Hussein, referee Alireza Faghani issued him a second yellow card. As a result, the 27-year-old striker was sent off and Iraq had to play with 10 players.

The Iraqi squad questioned Faghani’s decision to expel Hussein. The reason is, the referee did not give a yellow card when several Jordanian players did the same thing before.

Jordan kicked off in the remaining time to catch up against 10 men. The expected goal came in injury time through Yazan Al-Arab.

Jordan even managed to add a goal in the 90+7th minute through Nizar Al-Rashdan’s long-range shot. Jordan won 3-2 over Iraq and qualified for the quarterfinals.

The defeat of Jordan ensured that Iraq took the bag off 2023 Asian Cup. The Lions of Mesopotamia following the Indonesian and United Arab Emirates national teams who lost in the round of 16.
