Ilaria Salis will ask for house arrest in Budapest. This is the new trial strategy announced by father Roberto for the woman arrested a year ago in Hungary on charges of having taken part in the attack by two far-right militants. “Ilaria has changed her mind – she explained – given that this request to apply for house arrest in Hungary has come from many quarters. Now we have to find a house in Budapest and then – explains Roberto Salis – we will present the request”. Until now Ilaria had opposed it, her father explained, also because in Hungary periods under house arrest are valid one fifth on the calculation of the sentence to be served after any conviction; in practice, five days under house arrest count as one day in prison.
The Hungarian strategy in managing the case also changes, yes move to videos of clashes against neo-Nazis which would prove the involvement of Ilaria Salis. Images to which the Hungarian ambassador in Rome, Adam Kovacs, refers to accusing the Italian media of “distortions” on the case of the woman in prison in Budapest. The ambassador’s reply arrives indirectly: “Without going into the merits of the judicial case which will be decided by the Hungarian judiciary in its full independence, little and bad has been said about the events that occurred and the conduct of Ilaria Salis. According to evidence collected by the Hungarian investigative authorities, the picture of what happened in the days of February one year ago seems clear” and “absolutely illicit conduct emerges from the videos in the possession of the judicial authorities”. The Hungarian embassy in Rome therefore criticizes the reporting of the story in the Italian media. Roberto Salis defines these criticisms as unacceptable: “I expect the Italian institutions to reiterate to the Hungarian government – he said – that in our country the press is free and foreign interference in the work of Italian journalists is not welcome.”
