Chavismo Blocks Opposition Candidate Corina Yoris from Registering for Venezuela’s Presidential Elections

Chavismo, the ruling party in Venezuela, is facing accusations of blocking 80-year-old academic Corina Yoris from registering as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. Yoris, who is representing opposition leader María Corina Machado, poses a significant threat to the continued power of current President Nicolás Maduro. Despite having a clean record with no prior political or public positions, Yoris has been prevented from registering by blocking the website and restricting access to the registration center in Caracas with the presence of military personnel.

“My rights as a Venezuelan citizen are being violated by not allowing me to access the system and register my candidacy for the Presidency of Venezuela,” Yoris stated at a press conference. Despite the obstacles, the opposition is determined to continue their efforts to register Yoris before the deadline.

The National Electoral Center (CNE), controlled by Chavismo, has only permitted candidates to register who do not pose a risk to the ruling party’s hold on power. This move has sparked outrage among the opposition, who see it as a clear attempt to stifle democratic processes and prevent fair competition in the elections.

At present, ten candidates, including Maduro, have been registered. However, the opposition argues that the disqualification of candidates like Yoris undermines the unity and representation of the Venezuelan people in the electoral process.

As the deadline for registration approaches, tensions are rising in Venezuela’s political landscape. The opposition is calling for transparency and fairness in the registration process, while Chavismo appears determined to maintain its grip on power by any means necessary. The future of Venezuela hangs in the balance as the country navigates a complex and contentious electoral season.
