Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere begins this Wednesday (20), at 0:06 am (Brasília time), and ends on June 21, at 5:51 pm (Brasília time), according to the season’s climate forecast produced by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) in partnership with the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

Autumn is the transition season between the hot, humid summer and the cold, dry winter, especially in Central Brazil. During this period, rainfall is scarcer in the interior of Brazil, particularly in the semi-arid northeast.

In the northern part of the North and Northeast regions, it is still a time of heavy rain, especially if the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) persists further south of its climatological position.

This season is also characterized by incursions of cold air masses, coming from the south of the continent, which cause a decline in air temperatures, mainly in the South Region and part of the Southeast Region.

During the season, the first occurrences of adverse phenomena, typical of autumn, are observed, such as: fog in the South, Southeast and Central-West regions; frosts in the South and Southeast regions and in Mato Grosso do Sul; snow in the mountainous areas and plateaus of the South Region and cold in the south of the North Region and in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso.
