Congo: “too much violence”, a state of siege in 2 provinces

Kinshasa – The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, has decreed a “state of siege” in two eastern provinces, at the center of violence by armed rebel groups. The government spokesman announced this.

The provinces concerned are that of North Kivu, where the ambassador Luca Attanasio was killed, and that of Ituri; the modalities of its application will be detailed in a subsequent presidential ordinance.

On Thursday, President Tshisekedi warned that he was preparing “radical measures” given the insecurity that reigns in the east of the country; and two days earlier, in Paris, he had asked French President Emmanuel Macron for help from France to “eradicate” the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the Beni region (North Kivu), an armed group “with Islamist tendencies and methods” .
