Bundesliga

Bayern – Gladbach 3:1

Bayern Munich remains close to leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race – but has to work a lot for it. The German record champions won 3-1 against fearful opponents Borussia Mönchengladbach and turned the game around. Because Nico Elvedi puts the “Foals” ahead 1-0 in the 35th minute after a fatal bad pass from Manuel Neuer to Thomas Müller.

But Bayern react in the style of a champion: Aleksandar Pavlovic, Harry Kane and Matthijs de Ligt score for Munich and ensure a confident victory. The 3-1 win is also the 500th competitive win for Bayern star Thomas Müller – a new club record.

Freiburg – Stuttgart 1:3

VfB Stuttgart remains fully in the race for the Champions League places. The Swabians won 3-1 at SC Freiburg thanks to a lightning start. Deniz Undav and Chris Führich quickly set the course for VfB victory in the first seven minutes. In the 18th minute, Freiburg’s Merlin Röhl was shown the red card. Lukas Kübler was able to shorten the score in the long injury time of the first half – objects had flown onto the field – but Maximilian Mittelstädt put the lid on it for Stuttgart in the 74th minute.

Leonidas Stergiou will now play a more important role for the Swabians after the long injury-related absence of Dan-Axel Zagadou (torn cruciate ligament). The former St. Gallen player moved into defense for Zagadou, was in the starting line-up for the first time and played on the right side.

Bochum – Augsburg 1:1

Despite a fantastic overhead kick from Moritz Broschinski, VfL Bochum missed a big step towards staying in the league. Coach Thomas Letsch’s team has to settle for a 1-1 draw against FC Augsburg with Kevin Mbabu and Ruben Vargas, but remains unbeaten in the seventh game in a row at the Ruhrstadion. It was almost enough to win: Ermedin Demirovic secured Augsburg a late point win with a penalty goal in stoppage time.

Mainz – Bremen 0:1

Thanks to an early goal from Marvin Ducksch, Werder Bremen put a bitter damper on the carnival atmosphere at FSV Mainz 05. The North Germans beat the Rheinhessen 1-0 after Ducksch punished a big mistake by the Mainz defense in the second minute. The desperate final offensive of the 05ers with Silvan Widmer is no longer rewarded. This means Mainz remain at the bottom of the table, while Werder continues to climb up.

Newcastle – Luton 4:4

Goal spectacle between Fabian Schär’s Newcastle United and newly promoted Luton Town: Things go back and forth in St. James’ Park in the first half. First Matty Longstaff gives the hosts an early lead. Luton then managed to equalize through Gabriel Osho, before Longstaff put the “Magpies” back in front with his second goal. Shortly before the break, Ross Barkley took advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to equalize again.

After the break, the newcomer literally overwhelmed his opponent. First Carlton Morris surprisingly gave the guests the lead with a penalty, and a short time later Elijah Adebayo even increased it to 4-2 for Luton. But the lead doesn’t last long. Full-back Kieran Trippier reduced the score to 3:4, and in the 73rd minute substitute Harvey Barnes scored to make the final score 4:4.

Tottenham Hotspur have dropped important points in the race for the Champions League places. The Brazilian Richarlison puts Tottenham twice ahead against his former club with a brace before half-time. In the final phase the pressure from the “Toffees” increased and Jarrad Branthwaite equalized deep in added time. Everton moves up to 17th place with the point win.

Frosinone – Milan 2:3

AC Milan pulled its head out of the loop late on and secured a rather flattering 3-2 win at newly promoted Frosinone Calcio. Noble joker Luka Jovic can be celebrated as the match winner thanks to his winning goal in the 81st minute – just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Juventus loanee Matias Soulé is making history for the guests: The 20-year-old Argentine scores with a penalty in the 24th minute to make it 1-1. With his tenth goal of the season, Soulé is now the first player to score double figures for Frosinone in Serie A. Like Jovic, Swiss international Noah Okafor is initially just languishing on the bench. The striker came on for Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the 62nd minute and delivered an unremarkable performance.

Alaves – Barcelona 1:3

Ilkay Gündogan leads FC Barcelona to an important victory in the fight for renewed participation in the Champions League. The German international prepared Robert Lewandowski’s first goal in the 3-1 win at Deportivo Alaves and scored the second himself shortly after the break. However, the work is not yet done, as Alaves immediately hit back through Samu.

Then follow 13 wild minutes for Barça’s Vitor Roque: The Brazilian winter signing comes on as a substitute for the ailing Gündogan, scores four minutes later to make it 3-1, sees yellow and finally yellow-red. The Catalans confidently achieved victory even when they were outnumbered.

Because he celebrated too long and too intensely, he missed training. In his first game after the short break, Marcus Rashford scored again. The 26-year-old from Manchester United can no longer afford to do much.

Instead of describing Marcus Rashford’s career so far, one might as well use the last week and a half as a perfectly fitting metaphor.
