ESC preliminary decision: Isaak goes to Malmö for Germany

As of: February 17, 2024 3:02 a.m

Isaak won the German ESC preliminary round in 2024. With “Always On The Run” he will represent Germany in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö on May 11th.

Also on stage in the show “Eurovision Song Contest – The German Finale 2024” were: NinetyNine with “Love On A Budget”, Leona with “Undream You”, Galant with “Katze”, Floryan with “Scars”, Bodine Monet with “Tears Like Rain”, Ryk with “Oh Boy”, Marie Reim with “Naiv” and Max Mutzke with “Forever Strong”.

Isaak now wants to give 100 percent at the ESC in Malmö. Full of joy and self-confidence, he summarized his feelings after his victory as follows:

“That was my goal: that I go on stage and just be completely with myself. And I do what I am and who I am – and I don’t try to please people. Because if I’m enthusiastic about it myself, that’s it It’s easier to get others excited about it too. And I think I’ve managed to do that incredibly well. I’m super proud of myself. From the tips of my toes to the top of my hair, I’m so ready!” Isaac

German final with top-class ESC celebrities

Barbara Schöneberger moderated the German final. The prominent guests were: last year’s participant Lord Of The Lost, the multiple ESC participant Mary Roos, entertainer Riccardo Simonetti, pop singer Florian Silbereisen, singer Alli Neumann and the “I want to go to the ESC!” coach Conchita Wurst, the ESC winner 2014, and Rea Garvey.

His wife Loreen becomes Isaak’s lucky charm

After his victory, Isaak’s first path leads to his biggest fan in the audience, his wife Loreen. Nomen est omen: She seems to be the lucky charm for her loved one on the way to Sweden, as she has the same name as last year’s winner of the contest. And before her husband goes on stage that evening, she says that she would like to let him go to Malmö for a few days. After his victory, Isaak still seems a bit disbelieving about his success. He actually needs to go to the toilet. But there is no time for that now. The 28-year-old from Espelkamp in North Rhine-Westphalia can hardly find words: “I was able to estimate it to zero percent and started without any expectations.” But Issak can convince both the juries and the audience. There is the highest score of both.

Convinced the international jury and the audience: 28-year-old Isaak from Espelkamp.

The reward is the trophy from ESC icon Conchita. And then Isaak gets to sing his power ballad “Always On The Run” again – in which a bit of Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” from the film “Rocky” sounds in places. The confetti shower that follows is actually the color of a tiger’s eye, which is also a lucky stone. And Isaak can certainly use a good punch for Malmö.

Ryk and Max Mutzke: Favorites come away empty-handed

This evening ends less happily for Ryk, who was highly traded with the bookmakers in advance. Despite his impressive performance with “Oh Boy”, the musician from Hanover failed to compete for Germany at the ESC in his second attempt after 2018. Max Mutzke would also have liked to go to the ESC a second time – to Istanbul in 2004. But for the man from the Black Forest it’s only enough for second place – even though he’s convincing vocally that evening with “Forever Strong”. All the drumming on social media didn’t help: celebrities like Joko Winterscheidt, Annette Frier and Dunja Hayali called for people to vote for their “friend”.

Marie Reim, daughter of Michelle and Matthias Reim, also has to bury her dream of performing in Malmö – despite a lot of support from the hit industry and her mother’s red lace dress, the declared lucky charm. With “Naive” the 23-year-old only ends up in sixth place.

Musical fun with Galant and her “cat”

The Duo Galant sings about an “evil cat”. They do it in a very charming way.

In terms of musical tastes, there is something for everyone this evening: for example, retro-futuristic electropop from Galant. With their encouraging song “Katze” Mona Meiller and Paul-Aaron Wolf provide musical fun with a wink and a lot of meows. NinetyNine from Hamburg plays crossover pop with a guitar solo as the highlight. To support him, he brought his friend, the actor Mathieu Carrière, to Berlin. There is also celebrity support for Leona and her tender ballad “Unknown Dream”. From New Zealand, Max Giesinger sends a greeting to the 20-year-old from Hamburg.

Lord Of The Lost look back on Liverpool

Barbara Schöneberger and Florian Silbereisen sing a duet to an Abba medley.

Barbara Schöneberger leads the evening – in her typically cheeky way. As a greeting, she steps out of a solarium wearing a pink-orange glittery fringe in ESC design. “A cheaply purchased prop.” She self-deprecatingly calls her outfit a “screen glitch.” The presenter takes care of her guests, Florian Silbereisen, who is suffering from a toothache, gets an ice pack and birthday boy Ricardo Simonetti, who turns 31, gets a cake. With Lord Of The Lost, Schöneberger takes a look back at the past year. Despite coming last in Liverpool, they “lost nothing, but gained everything,” said the band. We can only hope that Isaak returns from Malmö with a similar conclusion.
