Breathe a sigh of relief in Breisgau! SC Freiburg defeated English first division club West Ham United 1-0 in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League and is therefore in a good position for the second leg on the island. The most important thing in brief: Joker Michael Gregoritsch makes SC Freiburg dream of reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League for the first time. After two unsuccessful attempts, coach Christian Streich’s team defeated English first division football team West Ham United 1-0 (0-0). Gregoritsch rewarded Freiburg for a courageous performance on Thursday evening with the winning goal (81st minute).
Both teams had already met in the group phase. West Ham won 2-1 in Freiburg in October and 2-0 at home in mid-December. The second leg in London is scheduled for March 14th. In between, the sports club, which has not won in six league games, will be visiting VfL Bochum on Sunday (3:30 p.m./DAZN).
SC Freiburg wants to develop a good starting position in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League on Thursday (9 p.m./RTL) against West Ham United. Both teams met in the preliminary round – the English first division football team had the upper hand twice. After the 2-2 draw against FC Bayern Munich in the league last Friday, the Breisgauers are now approaching the reunion with self-confidence.
Lukas Kübler will be available again after recovering from thigh problems. It is still too early for Philipp Lienhart to play after his groin operation. According to SC coach Christian Streich, he should be introduced slowly. The second leg will take place on March 14th in London.
