First spacewalk for two Chinese astronauts

by admin

Two astronauts made the first spacewalk outside the new Chinese orbital station to install cameras and other equipment with a 15-meter-long robotic arm. State TV showed Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo leaving the station, while the third crew member, Commander Nie Haisheng, remained inside. This is China’s second spacewalk after a 20-minute walk by a Chinese astronaut who exited the Shenzhou 7 space shuttle in 2008.

The two spent nearly seven hours outside the station, the Chinese space agency reported. The astronauts arrived on June 17 for a three-month mission to the Chinese orbital station, which is still under construction, with two more modules to be connected to the first part by 2022. The mission is part of an ambitious Beijing space program, which landed a rover robot on Mars in May.
