PARIS. Make vaccination mandatory in order to completely defeat the pandemic. It is the recommendation of the French National Academy of Medicine that relaunches a very heated debate beyond the Alps. Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, the government has always replied that it does not want to establish any obligations, not even for the professions most at risk such as doctors and nurses. This position is justified both by an initial reticence in the race for immunity in France on the part of some categories, such as medical personnel who for a third are not yet vaccinated. The other reason for the government’s reluctance to impose serum for everyone was the lack of doses for up to a few weeks.

Now the shortage of production has been overcome, so much so that as of this week the government has announced that vaccination is open to everyone, regardless of age or pathology, 15 days ahead of the schedule. Finding an appointment through the various platforms has become quick and easy, so much so that many young people are already vaccinated. In short, the reasoning of the Academy of Medicine is to push for a final acceleration, forcing the most reticent, but also children and adolescents who in September should start a life as normal as possible again. “It is the only way to obtain sufficient collective immunity to control the epidemic”, write the scholars of the independent body that expresses non-binding opinions for the government. The Academy recalls that “with an efficacy rate since 90 % to 95% against severe forms of Covid, the vaccines currently approved in France fill the conditions that make it possible to resort to compulsory vaccination “as happens for other diseases. A few years ago, the government already made 11 vaccines mandatory for children, a law similar to the one passed in Italy.

According to experts, to avoid the risk of a fourth wave, 90% of the adult population vaccinated should be reached by the summer. A goal that seems distant, continues the Academy, given that about 30% of the population still doubts or is clearly hostile. The institution recommends introducing a gradual obligation, starting with the most exposed categories such as medical staff, teachers, police and public administration in general, clerks and supermarket cashiers, and then moving on to students in view of the start of the 2021 academic year. So far the government continues to oppose a vaccine obligation tout court, for fear of failing to apply and creating even stronger resistance. Also for the new “health pass” which will come into force in June, a bar code that will allow you to participate in gatherings and collective activities, the vaccination certificate has not been exclusively provided. It will also be possible to obtain the “pass” with a simple negative swab.
