Funai Festival, initiatives on the occasion of San Biagio’s day

On the occasion of the Day of San Biagio, February 3rd, San Benedetto celebrates the traditional “Festa dei Funai”. The anniversary, institutionalized in 2007 by the municipal administration, originates from the celebration organized on 3 February 1911 by Don Francesco Sciocchetti, then parish priest of the church of Santa Maria della Marina, on the occasion of the elevation of an altar to San Biagio, protector of carders .
On Sunday 4 February, to celebrate the institutional anniversary, the Municipality of San Benedetto, with the collaboration of the Maritime Museum, is organizing a visit dedicated to the tradition of rope makers. The event, entitled “Outside the museum – the places of the rope makers“, will offer all those who want to participate the opportunity to immerse themselves in the city’s history. The event will open at 10.30 am in the headquarters of the Sea Museum in via Colombo with a performance by the “Ribalta Picena” theater company, and then continue with a walk that will lead visitors to discover the historical places of the profession still today present in San Benedetto.
The entire visit will take place in the company of a dedicated tour guide who will illustrate views, facts and traditions of the rope-making profession. The event is accessible to people with motor and sensory disabilities and an interpreting service in Italian Sign Language – LIS is also provided.
Participation in the event is free, with mandatory reservation of your place by calling the number 353 4109069.
“The Funai Festival – says the councilor for Culture Lia Sebastiani presenting the initiative – is an appointment with the tradition of our San Benedetto, a moment dedicated to the custody and transfer to the new generations of the value of the city’s traditions so that traces of them remain in the community. It is important to celebrate it and even more to make the new generations participate in this moment, so that they become aware of what the history of San Benedetto and the people of San Benedetto has been and are aware of how far our city has come, from its beginnings to today”.
