The National Social Security Institute (INSS) announced this week that it began calling 4,351,557 retirees and pensioners born in the months of January, February and March to take the life test. These people fall into cases where the body itself is unable to carry out the verification because it cannot find the beneficiary in any database.

Since January 2023, the INSS has been responsible for carrying out the operation. Previously, it was retirees and pensioners who had to go in person to financial institutions paying benefits. With the changes to the rules, the Institute began using databases from federal, state, municipal and private agencies to check whether policyholders are alive, by crossing information.
However, there are still cases in which the INSS does not find the beneficiary in any database. Because of this, the agency sends a notification via the Meu INSS app, Central 135 or bank message informing that the proof of life has not yet been carried out.
If the beneficiary does not provide proof within 60 days of notification, payment of the amounts may be blocked. To avoid taking the risk, the person receiving the message must access the Meu INSS portal or the bank where they receive the benefit to carry out the proof of life.
How to carry out the life test?
With changes to the rules in 2023, different acts now count as proof of life. Simply accessing the Meu INSS app, available for Android and iOS, already guarantees the operation. Carrying out payroll loans or receiving benefit payments with biometric recognition also count.
Being up to date with vaccinations, making updates to the Single Registry (CadÚnico), voting in elections and registering or re-registering with traffic or public security bodies are also tasks considered as proof of life. Issuing or renewing documents such as ID, work card and passport and declaring Income Tax (IR) are other acts that are valid as proof.
Those who prefer can also carry out the proof of life in person, as was done before 2023. To do this, simply go to a Social Security agency or a bank carrying an identification document with a photo.
