Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that the United States will not provide Iran with a guarantee that it will not violate the nuclear agreement again, and experience has proved that it “believes that the West will not work”. Currently, Iran is in talks with major powers to restore agreement on its nuclear program, and a new president is about to take office.
Khamenei issued a statement when meeting with government members and President Hassan Rouhani that Rouhani adopted a relatively open policy to the West during his tenure (in 2013), the most prominent of which was in 2015 and the six major powers (the United States). , Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany) signed the nuclear agreement.
Khamenei added that the United States insisted on its position in the Vienna nuclear negotiations and did not make concessions from these positions; he said that this shows the stubbornness of the United States.
The Iranian Supreme Leader pointed out that during the Vienna negotiations, the United States requested a new clause in the nuclear agreement, requiring Iran to agree to other issues in future negotiations.
Khamenei added that the United States said that whether an understanding can be reached on the resumption of the nuclear agreement will depend on Iran’s agreement to this new condition, and the clause will become a tool for the United States to interfere in Iran’s affairs.
Khamenei said that trusting the experience of Western countries is a failure, nor did it succeed in the Rouhani era. The next government should benefit from this experience and do not trust Western countries.
American position
At the same time, the Axios website quoted a senior US official as saying that the United States hopes that the new Iranian government will not think that it will gain more benefits than its predecessors in the nuclear agreement because its position is stronger.
The U.S. official added that the U.S. position on the nuclear agreement will not change, and the Iranians cannot re-enact the nuclear agreement again.
Cancelled agreement
The nuclear agreement made it possible for Iran to limit its nuclear activities and ensure a peaceful nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of many sanctions. But since former U.S. President Donald Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw from the nuclear agreement in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, the impact of the nuclear agreement has lapsed; the sanctions have caused serious economic and social crises.
US President Joe Biden, who took office at the beginning of this year, expressed his willingness to return to the agreement on the condition that Iran fully respects its obligations after gradually waiving its obligations under the nuclear agreement one year after the United States withdrew.
Iran and the countries still participating in the agreement began negotiations in Vienna in early April to save the nuclear agreement, and the United States indirectly participated in the negotiations.
The two sides held six rounds of talks between April and June, but did not set a date for the new round of talks.
The sixth round of the Vienna negotiations ended in late June. At that time, Iran stated that the delegations had returned to their capitals for consultations, while the United States stated that major issues had not yet been resolved.
President Rouhani had previously promised to seek lifting of sanctions before the end of his term in early August, but Iran confirmed this month that it would not resume negotiations until the new government takes over.
