They were the dawn of modern football in Spain. Many times sponsored by British emigrants who brought with them this simple, very basic game that despite that, or perhaps because of that, dazzled (and dazzles) the masses, the first clubs appeared here and there. There were no more than half a dozen when the Irún Football Club emerged in 1902. Five years later it changed its name to Irún Sporting Club to accommodate other disciplines within it.

The following year, some of the club members left and founded the Racing Club of Irún. The rivalry between both entities was what can be expected. Racing touched the sky in 1913 by proclaiming itself champion of the Copa del Rey and two years later, overcoming past quarrels, Sporting and Racing merged into a common and new project that was called Real Unión Club de Irun. This, ultimately one of the founders of the Spanish league, retained that cup title up to three times and became one of the best teams in the world in that decade of the 20s of the last 20th century.
