On the 23rd, a Japanese sightseeing boat carrying 26 people lost contact in the waters near the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido. Japan’s search and rescue department said on the 25th that a child rescued in the waters east of Shiretoko Cape late at night on the 24th has been confirmed dead. At present, a total of 11 people have been confirmed dead, and 15 people are still missing.

The Japan Coast Guard said that the main search and rescue area is the nearby waters where the rescue signal was issued, but life-saving tools equipped with sightseeing boats were found on the sea near Cape Shiretoko, about 14 kilometers north of the place. Since the crew said that the engine of the sightseeing boat had stopped working at the time of the incident, the missing sightseeing boat may have been washed to the north by the waves.

Affected by the missing sightseeing boat accident, on the 24th, the Shiretoko Small Sightseeing Boat Association, which consists of four local companies, announced that the local sightseeing boats would stop running from April 28 to May 8. On the afternoon of the same day, the staff of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan entered the operating company of the wrecked sightseeing boat to conduct an investigation. At the same time, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism requires nationwide passenger ship operators to submit hull inspection and safety management documents, and plans to conduct safety inspections on related companies in turn.
