– I laughed then I understood. He took the girls by storm!
That’s what Anne Mette Waagenes (58) says to Dagbladet.
She is the initiator of the group “Strikk og Drikk Bergen”, where several handy people meet every other Tuesday. Then they take hold of the knitting needles and let the laughter hang loose.

– It’s a fantastic event, open to everyone. We have members who are anywhere from 17 to 90 years old, says Anne Mette happily.
Had a great visit
The 58-year-old tells Dagbladet that there is often great interest in Knitting Tuesdays in Bergen. One day in March, however, the yarn affair became extra resilient for the knitting-loving gang, when they had a star-studded visit to the cafe:
Suddenly, the American comedian and talk show host Conan O’Brien appeared.
– It was absolutely incredible. Suddenly he was standing in the middle of the room with two knitting needles and a yellow ball of yarn, says Anne Mette to Dagbladet and chuckles.

She says that everyone in the room was quite “starstruck”.
– The one woman in the cafe exclaimed: “Jesus, he’s a really famous comedian from the States!”. It was incredibly fun, she continues.
Bergensavisen reported on the case first.

– Exciting
The 58-year-old says that they had previously received a request in the Facebook group “Knitting and Drinking” if they could bring an anonymous guest to one of their meetings. The person was to ask a few questions about Norway and Norwegian culture – and promised a good atmosphere.
– We had no idea who it was, and it’s a bit special to say yes to something completely unknown. But we thought it was exciting, and carried on, continues Anne Mette.
The evening in question came, and it turned out that “Strikk og Drikk Bergen” was selected as a stop in the new travel program “Conan O’Brien Must go”, where the comedian travels around Norway to “make new friends, sing about salmon and try yourself as a Viking”, according to HBO’s website.

It is therefore in the first episode, which aired on 18 April, that the comedian travels to Bergen to experience the joy of knitting with Anne Mette and co.
She says that the American comedian stayed “through the whole evening”, and says he created a criminally good atmosphere in the knitting cafe.
– It was great fun. Absolutely hysterical. The man is crazy, she says and chatters on.
Knitted thong
Although O’Brien was painfully good at both jokes and small talk, his knitting skills were not as good. In fact, Anne Mette reveals to Dagbladet that he got a little help with the knitting.
– He had a “wingman” in the side checker, yes. She put up some masks for him. It started as a scarf, but took a different turn, she says and continues:
– He ended up knitting himself a thong. I think everyone’s jaw hurt from laughing so much.

The star unrecognizable
– It was absolutely incredible that he came to us, of all places. Simply great fun, she says in conclusion.
