Date: July 21, 2023

The serene coastal waters of Peru have become a theater for an awe-inspiring display of nature as humpback whales make their way through the Peruvian sea. The National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) has reported the sighting of these majestic creatures off the coast of Lima and in the southern region of Moquegua, offering a remarkable spectacle for both locals and visitors.

Sernanp, in a statement released on Friday, highlighted that Peru’s natural marine protected areas have become an unlikely stage for this incredible show. The agency expressed its delight in witnessing the passage of humpback whales and shared breathtaking images captured by park rangers. Notable sightings were recorded on Mazorca Island in Huacho, Lima, as well as the Cavinzas Islands and Palomino islets near the port of Callao. Additionally, Punta Coles, in the Moqueguan province of Ilo, showcased a similar display in the south of the country.

“The passage of a humpback whale and its calf make up one of the most beautiful and magical spectacles that nature gives us,” emphasized Sernanp.

The recorded footage, captured using drone technology, offers a glimpse into the annual phenomenon that occurs between June and October. These protected areas have become a vital migratory route and birthplace for humpback whales. Every year, these magnificent creatures journey from Antarctica to mate and give birth in the northern coasts of Peru.

Male humpback whales typically measure between 14 and 15 meters, while females can reach an impressive length of 16 to 18 meters. They weigh between 25 and 30 tons and have an average lifespan of 45 to 50 years.

In light of this remarkable encounter, Sernanp reminded the public that Peru has established “minimum distances” to ensure the whales’ protection during their migration and breeding season.

This enchanting event serves as a reminder of the sheer wonder and beauty that exists within nature. Witnessing these gentle giants gracefully navigating through Peruvian waters leaves spectators in awe and deepens our appreciation for the delicate balance of the world we inhabit.

The passage of humpback whales through the Peruvian sea offers an exceptional opportunity for locals and tourists alike to witness nature’s captivating spectacle firsthand. These annual migrations serve as a testament to the importance of conservation efforts and the need to protect these stunning creatures for generations to come.
