Angela Chao, an international shipping company billionaire in New York, was found dead on February 11, 2024 during an accident involving an electric car Tesla near Austin, Texas, United States (US).

According to a statement from Chao’s family on the day of the incident, they did not reveal any details about his death, and authorities in Blanco County have not released any additional information, as the investigation is ongoing.

According to The Wall Street Journalwhich received information from the local fire department, revealed that rescue workers needed diving equipment when they arrived at the scene, but none were available.

An emergency unit finally arrived at the scene about 24 minutes after receiving the call for help.

Officers asked for equipment to open the window of the vehicle Chao was driving, a Tesla, then entered the water carrying rescue equipment.

According to Ben Oakley, head of Blanco County emergency services, Chao was found unresponsive after the car was pulled from the water. Then the officers tried to revive him.

Chao is known as the brother-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, chairman and CEO of Foremost Group, his family’s shipping company, and president of the Foremost Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by his father.

The Wall Street Journal reported that this incident started with Chao mistakenly shifting the reverse gear of his Tesla car, causing the car to go backwards instead of going forward.

Not only Chao, many Tesla owners complain that the car’s gear shift design is confusing. According to Business Insider, there have been many consumer complaints filed with the US Department of Transportation regarding the reverse function of Tesla cars.
