North Rhine-Westphalia: Changeable weather at Easter – Sahara dust dampens temperatures here

As of: March 29, 2024 4:13 p.m

Weather apps predict temperatures of up to 20 to 25 degrees for the Easter weekend. But be careful: it shouldn’t be that warm – that’s what Sahara dust comes to us in Germany.

T-Shirt-Wetter at Easter – nothing will come of it. Because the reddish Saharan dust, a stream of which comes to us here, clouds the sun, which means it doesn’t get as warm as the weather apps promise.

Sahara dust? Here in Germany? It is not unusual for desert sand to be blown up in North Africa and, with warm air, often travel via Morocco and France to Germany and thus also to North Rhine-Westphalia. “This happens 5 to 15 times a year, mainly in spring and summer,” says the WDR weather department. But most of the time we don’t even notice it because the mixture of mineral dust particles floats in higher layers of air. Only rain brings them close to the ground .

Cloudy sunshine affects warming

The particles carried in the middle and high layers of air act as so-called condensation nuclei and promote cloud formation when moisture is present. The resulting clouded sunshine has a dampening effect on the warming during the day. And since weather models do not adequately capture such Sahara dust scenarios, there will be bigger surprises when it comes to maximum temperatures, especially on Holy Saturday.

“So it will almost certainly not be as warm as the weather apps show us,” said the WDR weather editorial team. Unfortunately, it is difficult to predict how much the Sahara dust will ultimately affect temperature developments.

It will be very windy to stormy on Easter Monday

What is emerging, according to the WDR meteorologists, is the following: Initially, here in the West, the dry and sometimes friendly impression predominates on Holy Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms may develop in the region around the Eifel and the southern Rhineland in the late afternoon and evening.

On Easter Sunday there will be sunshine, clouds and new showers and occasional thunder and lightning possible from the southwest. On Easter Monday there are a lot of clouds, few bright spots and repeated showers of rain. It will be very windy to stormy.
