Holstein Kiel achieved a dramatic 2-2 (0-2) draw in the 2nd Bundesliga on Friday evening. The “Storks” made up for a deficit and equalized in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
From Kiel’s perspective, Timo Becker was the man of the evening. He kept his nerve in the 98th minute and scored with a penalty kick to equalize, which was no longer thought possible. For a long time it didn’t look as if the people of Schleswig-Holstein would take anything worth taking home with them. “It was difficult to come back after being behind, so a huge compliment to the team,” said captain Philipp Sander.
For KSV Holstein, the first setback occurred before kick-off in the Olympic Stadium. Steven Skrzybski was out for a short time with back problems. Since Benedikt Pichler and Fiete Arp are also still injured, coach Marcel Rapp was missing his team’s three best goalscorers.

And this had a negative impact on the “Storks” game. The guests had a visual advantage and sometimes let the ball run well in midfield. But there was a lack of someone in the front line who exuded presence and a goal threat.
Sander with a catastrophic bad pass
The young Hertha team didn’t exactly exude fear and terror either. Nevertheless, she took the lead because Sander made a big mistake. He lost track of things on the sideline and played the ball into the feet of Haris Tabakovic, who went around keeper Timon Weiner and slotted it in to make it 1-0 (17′).
Bitter for Sander, who later received his fifth yellow card and will therefore be suspended against Karlsruhe in the coming weeks.
Finn Porath had the best chance to equalize for Kiel seven minutes later, but his shot after a nice combination over the right wing was blocked.
Hertha BSC consistently uses its opportunities
Shortly before the break, Tabakovic once again showed what offensive effectiveness looks like: He initially failed with a volley shot past Weiner, but then sank the ball into the goal in the follow-up to make it 2-0 (45th).
But the people of Kiel were far from admitting defeat. They came out of the locker room powerfully and pushed Hertha into their own half. But it remained that way: the Rapp selection hardly posed any danger. Every now and then a long-range shot – nothing more came into the home team’s box.
Porath provides hope once again
And the Berliners almost got their next gift. Weiner completely misjudged a free kick from Jonjoe Kenny and the ball hit the crossbar directly above the goalkeeper (59′).

Should there be one last gasp from the “storks”? It didn’t look like it. Hertha gained more and more breathing room and got more and more space to counterattack. They didn’t use it and suddenly Kiel was back in the game. Porath shot from 15 meters, the ball was deflected and hit unstoppable (81′).
And things got dramatic again. When stoppage time had already expired, video evidence showed the visitors were awarded a penalty. Linus Gechter met Patrick Erras while trying to clear the ball. After the VAR intervened, referee Bastian Dankert looked at the scene and pointed to the spot.
Becker converted safely and caused great celebration among the Kiel team. “When I took the penalty, I knew where I wanted to shoot and I’m obviously happy that the ball went in,” said Werner about his goal.
