On June 17, 2020, local time, in Paris, France, workers dismantled the burnt-out scaffolding of Notre Dame Cathedral and installed new scaffolding.
Up to now, the focus of the French authorities has been to ensure the safety of the church’s building structure, including the removal of 40,000 scaffoldings damaged in the fire.
In a statement on September 18, the agency responsible for the protection and restoration of the church stated that the protection of the cathedral has been completed as scheduled. According to the report, the French authorities will conduct tenders to select companies for repair work. The interior walls and floors of the cathedral will also undergo a “thorough cleanup” later this month.
After the fire, French President Macron promised to rebuild Notre Dame de Paris within five years. In April of this year, he reiterated, “We hope to return to the cathedral for worship in 2024. But there is still a lot of work to be done.”
On the other hand, the cause of the fire has not yet been investigated. The Paris prosecutors’ department has ruled out the possibility of deliberate arson, and has made it clear that the church has defects in security, especially the alarm system.
