ChinanewsSeptember 19, according to the reportAccording to media reports, on the 18th local time, the French authorities said that after months of hard work, they have ensured the safety of the Notre Dame Cathedral and are ready for restoration work. It is expected to reopen in 2024.

On April 15, 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral was hit by a fire. The entire building was seriously damaged. Most of the top was burnt down, and the spire collapsed in the fire. Due to the new crown pneumonia epidemic, weather and lead pollution problems, reconstruction work has been repeatedly delayed.

On June 17, 2020, local time, in Paris, France, workers dismantled the burnt-out scaffolding of Notre Dame Cathedral and installed new scaffolding.

Up to now, the focus of the French authorities has been to ensure the safety of the church’s building structure, including the removal of 40,000 scaffoldings damaged in the fire.

In a statement on September 18, the agency responsible for the protection and restoration of the church stated that the protection of the cathedral has been completed as scheduled. Relevant person in charge George Lin (Jean-Louis Georgelin) said, “This means that we officially announce that the cathedral has now been saved, and its pillars and walls are very strong.”

He added: “We will unswervingly advance the restoration and reconstruction of the parts destroyed by the fire, so that services and public visits will be reopened in 2024.”

According to the report, the French authorities will conduct tenders to select companies for repair work. The interior walls and floors of the cathedral will also undergo a “thorough cleanup” later this month.

After the fire, French President Macron promised to rebuild Notre Dame de Paris within five years. In April of this year, he reiterated, “We hope to return to the cathedral for worship in 2024. But there is still a lot of work to be done.”

On the other hand, the cause of the fire has not yet been investigated. The Paris prosecutors’ department has ruled out the possibility of deliberate arson, and has made it clear that the church has defects in security, especially the alarm system. Due to the severe damage to the church, it became very complicated to confirm the cause of the accident.
