Palmeiras beat Cuiabá 2-0 this Sunday (5) for the fifth round of the Brazilian Championship. At Arena Pantanal, Lázaro opened the scoring for Abel Ferreira’s team at the end of the first half. In the second stage, Estevão suffered a penalty and he himself took the penalty to close the score and declare Verdão’s victory.
With this result, Palmeiras reached eight points and rose from 12th to sixth place in the table. Cuiabá remains at the bottom of the Brasileirão with no points yet.
Palmeiras now becomes the key to the Libertadores. The team faces Liverpool-URU away from home next Thursday (9). Cuiabá is committed to the Copa Sudamericana, facing Metroppolitanos-VEN, at home, next Wednesday (8).
The game
Even playing away from home, Palmeiras tried to impose themselves at the beginning of the match. With less than six minutes, the club managed to reach danger twice, both times with Endrick. In the first, the attacker took the leftovers and kicked, without much force, towards Walter’s defense.
Afterwards, Luis Guilherme was activated on the right and crossed with a header. At the edge of the area, Endrick finished first, but over the top. At 12, it was Piquerez’s turn to try, with a cross that stopped at the goalkeeper.
Cuiabá, in turn, got scared for the first time in the 21st minute. Pitta appeared freely on the left side of the area and headed towards the middle. Weverton stretched out and made a good intervention.
From then on, the game’s performance dropped significantly. Both teams found it very difficult to attack. Then, when the clock was already showing 45 minutes, Luis Guilherme pulled a beautiful cross out of his hat and saw Lázaro head it with precision to put the visitors ahead.
Second time
After the break, Palmeiras tried to press in search of the second, but had difficulty creating real chances. On the other side, Cuiabá tried to break free and almost tied at nine. Fernando Sobral took a hit from the edge of the area and forced Weverton to make a great save.
The alviverde response came in the next move. Endrick counterattacked, crossed the line with Luis Guilherme and, face to face with Walter, stopped at the goalkeeper.
In the 23rd minute, Estevão made a great individual play and was brought down in the area. Immediately, Bruno Arleu de Araujo scored a penalty. The 17-year-old striker himself took responsibility and sent it into the corner to expand.
From then on, Verdão only had the job of controlling the result to guarantee the three points at Arena Pantanal. Cuiabá, in turn, only got scared at 43, with a shot from Bruno Alves that took paint off the post.
