In the previous two seasons of the Euroleague, Serbia had two representatives, and this could be the case in the next one as well. In an interview who is the executive director of the competition Paulijs Motiejunas gave to the Greek media it is clear that the elite competition of basketball clubs in Europe will not change the format for the next season, which seems like good news for Partizan and Crvena zvezda.
In previous years, it was known that only the winner of the ABA League has the possibility to reach the Euroleague, but as the Euroleague is behind us in two seasons awarded a special invitation to Serbian clubs, optimism is growing that this could happen next summer as well. Of course, if one of the two Serbian clubs wins the regional competition, the other one will compete for the “wild card”, so for the third year in a row we will be watching European clashes between the black and white and the red and white.
“In the new season we will have the same format. We go step by step, there is no clear plan. We want to see what will happen with the Russian teams and when they will be able to return, and what will happen with the Eurocup. There are many things to consider. We don’t want to be a closed league, because we never were. The Eurocup is our second competition, which is very important and big teams participate. We give everyone a chance to fight for the Euroleague, and we want to develop the Eurocup as well. For now, it is difficult to enter the Euroleague, so this is an intermediate step,” said Euroleague CEO Paulijs Motiejunas.

Immediately afterwards, the Lithuanian spoke about Dubai, which has been highlighting its candidacy for entering the competition of the best basketball clubs in Europe for months.
“There is interest and it is positive that there is a desire from both sides. It is an excellent city with incredible conditions. The decision is very difficult, because we are talking about another continent, another culture… Negotiations are ongoing precisely because the decision is not easy. The teams will vote , that hasn’t happened yet. There are doubts, but we don’t see doubt on the faces of the people running the project. The Euroleague is at a high level and whoever gets in is getting on a train that’s going 120 an hour. The risk exists and we want to minimize it, which is why we are talking about Dubai entering the Eurocup first“, Motiejunas pointed out.
According to one of the directors of the Euroleague, in the coming period there will be no space for the organization of the All-Star game, although it is an event that is very interesting for the competition.
“It probably won’t be in the new season either. It is significant that so many teams are fighting for a place in the top ten. The All-Star Game and other events are on our wish list, but we have to see how it all fits into the calendar. It will be great to gather all the teams and sponsors, not only for the Final Four, but for another big event in the season,” he concluded for “DNA“.
