The Municipal Department of Environment, Urbanism and Sustainability (Smamus) is cataloging mother trees in different regions of Porto Alegre. Developed by the Smamus Urban Afforestation Coordination, the work consists of identifying and mapping healthy trees and species threatened with extinction, few of which are produced in commercial nurseries . After selecting suitable species, technicians collect the seeds that are taken to the Municipal Nursery, where seedlings are produced that will later go to squares, parks and public roads in the municipality.Â

“By collecting seeds from trees that are already adapted to the city’s climatic conditions, we were also able to capture around 60% of this genetics so that the new seedlings are as adaptable as possible. as good as the matrices”, explains the coordinator of the Municipal Nursery, Rogério Schmidt. The seeds are collected from plants developed in different climatic and soil conditions, which will make it possible, in the long term, to carry out studies on the genetics and adaptability of the plants. urban trees.
