- Both goals were attributed to superstar Kylian Mbappé, who recently fell out of favor with the fans.
- Meanwhile, Bayern managed to turn things around at home against Lazio.
In the end it was a relaxed canter – and a bit of balm for the PSG soul, which had recently been slightly damaged. After two games without a win in Ligue 1, the French series champions beat Real Sociedad San Sebastian 2-1. After the 2-0 win in the first leg, there was never really any doubt as to whether the Parisians would reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Mbappé causes ambivalent feelings
Once again, Kylian Mbappé’s individual class was the decisive factor. Of all people, the superstar who incurred the displeasure of his own fans after his contract was not extended on the Seine: in the form of whistles in the game against Rennes or in the person of some ultras who celebrated the impending farewell at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. After a dip in form in recent weeks, Mbappé showed his class again against Real Sociedad:
- 15. Minute: 5 minutes earlier, Mbappé had launched Bradley Barcola after a wonderful start, but he failed from close range. Then the grandmaster does it himself: On the left side he asks two defenders to dance and then feeds the ball into the far corner from an acute angle.
- 56. Minute: Kang-in Lee sends Mbappé deep. The Frenchman can attack Real Sociedad keeper Alejandro Remiro alone. He fakes to the right and humorlessly slides in to the left.
This is likely to cause schizophrenic feelings among the PSG supporters. They know that the Champions League title they long for and demand from the Qatari owners, who constantly provide financial injections, is only realistic with Mbappé in top form.
The fair was now over with the interim overall score of 4:0. But “La Real” at least scored points in terms of morale. The Basques pressed for the consolation goal, which Ander Barrenetxea (63′) also managed. The celebration was short-lived as Barrenetxea was offside when he headed the ball. With the courage of desperation and after further good opportunities, the home goal finally came in the Reale Arena: Mikel Merino (90th) scored humorlessly from close range.

It is not yet known who PSG will face in the quarter-finals. The draw will take place on Friday, March 15th.
