Gunnar Sønsteby, known as agent Nr. 24 and the leader of the Oslo gang during the war, is the subject of the upcoming cinema film Nr. 24. The film explores Sønsteby’s life both during and after the war, focusing on his efforts for freedom and democracy. Sjur Vatne Brean (23) and Erik Hivju (76) take on the role of Sønsteby in the various phases of his life.

The film, which is a major investment from the creators of Max Manus and The 12th man, will depict Sønsteby’s transformation from auditor’s assistant to the Gestapo’s most wanted man. “We have gained a unique insight into young Gunnar’s extreme life, which Sjur Vatne Brean really manages to convey,” says director John Andreas Andersen, known from films such as the North Sea and The tremor.

In addition to the spectacular acts of sabotage, the film also sheds light on Sønsteby’s efforts after the war, where he spoke to young people about the importance of fighting for peace and democratic values. Erik Hivju, a veteran from the National Theater and known from roles in The king’s no and Max Manus, portrays an older version of Sønsteby. “It is a great honor to portray Gunnar Sønsteby, especially in a chapter of his life that deserves more attention,” says Hivju.

The recording of Nr. 24 is coming to an end, with recently completed recordings in Sønsteby’s hometown, Rjukan. Producer Terje Strømstad explains: “We have worked in extreme conditions to bring Erlend Loe and Espen von Ibenfeldt’s manuscript to life. We are convinced that this will be a special film experience for the Norwegian cinema audience.”

Nr. 24 is produced by Motion Blur and distributed by SF Studios, with a Norwegian cinema premiere on 30 October 2024.
