[New Tang Dynasty November 27, 2021 Beijing time]The World Health Organization (WHO) named the new mutant strain of the Chinese Communist Party virus (COVID-19) “B.1.1.529” as “Omicron” on November 26, and named this mutant strain Listed as “High Concern Variant”. Nu and Xi were skipped because they were not named according to the Greek alphabet. The outside world thought it might be “avoid stigmatization of the region.”

The Central News Agency reported that the WHO named the last mutant strain Mu. According to the Greek alphabet, most outsiders thought that the new mutant strain would be named Nu, but the WHO skipped Nu and Xi and chose to name it Omicron. Omicron (o) is the 15th letter of Greek.

The New York Post reported that the WHO did not immediately explain why, but some Internet users and politicians speculated that the WHO skipped Nu to avoid confusion with new (new) pronunciation; skipping Xi means It’s because the Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s surname “Xi” is called Xi in pinyin.

U.S. Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz tweeted a post by an editor of The Telegraph in the United Kingdom, quoting a WHO source saying that the skipping of Xi was to “avoid Stigmatization of the region”.

Cruz criticized China’s role in the COVID-19 outbreak, writing: “If the WHO is so afraid of the Chinese Communist Party, how can it be believed that the WHO will blame them next time they try to conceal a catastrophic global pandemic?”

The Wall Street Journal language columnist Ben Zimmer has a different view. He praised the WHO for skipping the potentially confusing Nu and Xi and directly choosing Omicron.
