LONDON – Two of South Africa’s richest, most influential and controversial businessmen have been arrested for corruption in the United Arab Emirates, where they had moved to escape justice in their country. Atul and Rajesh Gupta, who emigrated from India where they were born and raised, had built a billionaire empire in South Africa in the mining, technology and finance sector, forging iron ties with Jacob Zuma, South African president from 2009 to 2018, when he was forced to resign on corruption charges that saw him subsequently spend more than a year in prison before obtaining parole.
