A 35-year-old Italian died in Palma de Mallorca, Spain after being hit by a police car. Local media reports. The man, who worked as a waiter in a nearby restaurant, had just finished his shift Wednesday night and was walking with a colleague and friend in the Passeig Sagrera area when the police car ran over them. The driver appears to have lost control of the car after hitting the curb as it sped along and sirens blared in response to an emergency call. The victim was originally from Gallura, in Sardinia, between Tempio Pausania and Luras, even though he had lived for years in the Balearics. Immediately transported by ambulance to the university hospital of Son Espases, the man died of very serious injuries.
Palma safety councilor, Joana Maria Adrover, assured that there will be a “rigorous” investigation into the incident. She then added that the asphalt was wet, although it is not clear whether this was the cause of the skid. The officer who was driving underwent an alcohol test and tested negative. Both he and the agent who was alongside him, an intern, were offered psychological support. The Unami group, which runs the “49 Steps” where the dead Italian worked and other venues in Palma, Puerto Portals and Ibiza, has announced that it will close them for two days as a sign of mourning. Friends and colleagues placed flowers on the accident logo.
