In Afghanistan, a strong earthquake killed at least 250 people. The BBC reports that a local official of the country has been back in the hands of the Taliban since last August. Images disseminated on social media show houses destroyed and injured on stretchers in Paktika province. The local official spoke to the BBC of over 250 deaths, underlining that this is a provisional toll that could worsen, and more than 150 injured.
The United States Geological Survey (Usgs) recorded the 5.9 magnitude quake about 46 kilometers from the city of Khost, in southeastern Afghanistan, at a depth of 51 kilometers. The quake was also felt in neighboring Pakistan.
