It was a painting that survived the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD Thanks to the reconstruction tasks of the city, came about with this work that represents an episode from Greek mythology. Its value is incalculable and those responsible for the discovery will completely restore it.
The “Leda fresco” or painting of Leda is one of the wonders that was found in perfect condition under the rubble of Pompeii
The eruption of the Mount Vesuvius volcano was one of the most important and famous natural disasters of antiquity and its aftereffects still persist to this day. The city was left under ashes, completely destroyed and today it became a historical point, especially for the human figures that represent the exact moment in which the lava reached them and covered them.
This fact caused the loss of more than 1,500 years of memory of that place. Only in 1748 did expeditions return to the area to recover some of the treasure and splendor of the emblematic Pompeii.
There are still rubble to be unearthed and wonders to be discovered, such as the recent painting of Frisso and Elle, where they are seen fleeing on the Golden Veil ram. This image appeared in the middle of the reconstruction of the House of Leda and was made more than 2000 years ago. Its condition is what surprised archaeologists, especially for the vivid colors that are still maintained and that have overcome the passage of time.
The work on domus (Roman house) began in the 18th century, but in 2018 the activity there was resumed with the aim of opening it to the public in the future. This construction has tunnels 80 centimeters from ground level with sectors that have not yet been accessed. As explained by the Archaeological Park, upon entering the House of Leda There are two cubicles where these paintings are found. On the one hand, the one that was named the same as the residence mentioned and the second as The Cisne since it represents the figure of a girl with this bird in her arms.

These pictorial decorations correspond to Style IV and especially, Leda’s tells the Greek myth of the brothers Frisso and Elle who They were running away from their evil stepmother Ino in a magical ram with golden hair. While the young man is on the animal’s back, his sister falls into the water and watches him from there as a sign of needing help. The director of the archaeological site, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, described: “They are two refugees at sea from ancient Greece”.
According to legend, the persecution forced them to leave their native Beozia, since the stepmother who “corrupted the messengers of the Oracle of Delphi forced them to say that it was necessary to sacrifice the children of the husband of the first wife.” The goddess Hera saves them by sending the ram of the golden veil, with which they escape. Crossing the strait between Europe and Asia, Elle falls into the water and drowns; In the Pompeii fresco his face has almost completely disappeared between the waves. And the strait is named after him: Ellesponto,” Zuchtriegel completed the story.
