PARIS – The submarine crisis breaks out between Paris and Washington, via Canberra. Australia’s choice to tear up the “contract of the century”, or the order for twelve French submarines (worth over 30 billion euros), and to converge instead towards an Anglo-American consortium infuriates France. It is the consequence of the new defense pact between the US, the UK and Australia (Aukus) announced by President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, for the sharing of advanced technologies in order to counter the influence of China in the Indo-Pacific.
