Chilean Government requests Interpol alert and reinforces border control for alleged kidnapping of Venezuelan citizen
The Chilean Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, announced on Wednesday that the Executive has requested Interpol to raise an alert and reinforce border control after learning of the alleged kidnapping of a Venezuelan citizen, who is reported to be a former military man now living in Chile.
Monsalve stated that the Government has asked the police to strengthen border controls and has already requested Interpol to raise an alert. The Special Anti-Kidnapping Police Investigation Brigade of the Investigative Police (PDI) is leading the investigation, which has been declared under a secret designation. Monsalve emphasized that the investigation is being closely monitored by the Prosecutor’s Office.
The case involves Ronald Ojeda Moreno, who deserted from the Venezuelan Army and sought refuge in Chile. Despite various hypotheses regarding the kidnapping, Monsalve stressed that any confirmation or dismissal would be the responsibility of the Public Ministry in the context of the ongoing investigation.
In addition to the investigation, the Ministry of Defense has been asked to strengthen and activate border controls carried out by institutions such as the Maritime Police, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, and the Armed Forces in specific regions.
The collaboration of Interpol has also been requested to expand the search and collect information that may contribute to the prompt resolution of the case. Monsalve clarified that there has been no contact with Venezuelan authorities and described speculation about possible Venezuelan military operations in Chilean territory as “premature.”
The incident has raised concerns among Chilean politicians, with the president of the Foreign Relations Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Tomás De Rementería, calling for authorities of intelligence bodies to be summoned to see the information they have. Meanwhile, Deputy Luis Fernando Sánchez of the far-right Republican Party described the complaint as “very serious” and has not been officially confirmed by any authority.
