[New Tang Dynasty News on January 5, 2022, Beijing time]According to news recently, French researchers have discovered a new variant of the Chinese Communist virus (Covid-19) virus “B.1.640.2”. Researchers believe that this variant strain has 46 mutations and may be more infectious than the original strain.

On January 4, the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws (Het Laatste Nieuws) reported that a new variant strain of COVID-19, B.1.640.2, had occurred in southern France.

A preliminary research report by the “Mediterranean Infection Research Center” (IHU Méditerranée Infection) in Marseille showed that the first case entered from Cameroon, Africa, and at least 12 patients in France are currently infected with this variant virus.

The report published on the health science website medRxiv also stated that this variant strain has 46 mutations, which is higher than Omicron’s 37 mutations.

This variant strain contains two known mutations, N501Y and E484K. The previously discovered Alpha mutant (a British variant virus) also carries the N501Y mutation. N501Y is known to bind to cells more strongly, so it is easier to spread.

However, Belgian virologist Steven Van Gucht said that new mutant strains will appear every once in a while, and the nature of the virus is continuous mutation. There is no need to worry about the current situation.

The World Health Organization classified the B.1.640 variant as a variant under surveillance in November 2021. The impact on the epidemiology is still unclear. It is necessary to strengthen surveillance and repeated assessments, and wait for new evidence.
