The Sophistication of Iran’s Attack on Israel, Experts Compare with Russia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Some military experts compared Iran’s attack on Israel last weekend to the tactics launched by Russia in Ukraine.

Last Saturday, Iran launched 300 drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles at Israel. According to the Israeli military forces (IDF), 99% of these attacks are detected before they hit the target.

“The attack package launched is similar to one used repeatedly by Russia to attack Ukraine,” said Brian Carter and Frederick W. Kagan, defense experts for the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Project, quoted by Business Insider, Tuesday (16/4/2024) .

The IDF estimates the attack used 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles.

“The drones launched well before the ballistic missiles were fired. It’s likely they expected the strikes to arrive at Israel’s air defense window at the same time as the cruise missiles and drones,” the analyst said.

The slower speed of drones and cruise missiles is aimed at exhausting Israel’s air defense system. That way, ballistic missiles will be able to target targets more smoothly.

“Russia has taken a similar approach time and time again,” the expert said.

“Iranian forces did not take into account Israel’s more sophisticated defense system than Ukraine’s to thwart such an attack,” he added.

However, not everyone agrees that Iran is copying Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Fabian Hinz, a defense researcher at London’s International Institute for Strategic Studies, said Iran launched the combination missile attack to provide a warning to Israel.

So, Iran’s strategy was to give a strong warning to Israel first through an attack last weekend.

“This attack was designed to re-establish deterrence mechanisms on the Iranian side,” said Rodger Shanahan, a member of the Australian think tank Lowy Institute.
