Trujillo’s work in Colombia
In his last months at the head of the defense portfolio, which were also the last moments of his life, Trujillo faced one of the biggest crises that Colombia has experienced in recent times.
During 2021, a great social outbreak took over the entire country. In this period of time, protests and riots against the National Police were daily occurrences. and government institutions suffered great criticism for an alleged abuse of power.
However, under his leadership, Colombia managed to overcome the social crisis that, to this day, continues to be remembered as “The Outburst.” This political life, which ended amid controversy, began in Japan, where he served as consul.
Upon returning to Colombia, he returned to his hometown, Cali, where he began to climb within the city’s mayor’s office to become, in 1988, the first mayor elected by popular vote of the capital of the Valley.

After leaving the mayor’s office, he arrived at the National Constituent Assembly as a representative of the Liberal Party. From here, after moving to the State Council and being a peace councilor in the Samper government, He continued his diplomatic career as ambassador in Washington to the Association of American States (OAS).
During the governments of Uribe and Santos worked in different embassies in European countries such as Belgium and Switzerland.. However, after the Santos government ended, he came to work closely with former President Iván Duque.
Within his cabinet he held several positions, starting as Chancellor in 2018 and was at the forefront of the crisis of the Venezuelan regime when Juan Guaidó declared himself Interim President. In 2019, he left the chancellery and became defense minister.
Beyond his professional life, His family remembers him as a great human being and his children continue to talk about him with affection and nostalgia.
