A couple of weeks ago, all Liverpool supporters’ eyes were on Manchester City, Arsenal and the top of the Premier League table. With two losses, two draws and one win in the last five league games, the situation has become completely different.
Now we may have to look down the table, or rather to Tottenham and Aston Villa, who are fighting for a top 4 place. Or?
What makes it even more interesting (or more scary) is that Liverpool will face both in the last three rounds of the series.
Should go in the box
It is heavy, difficult and terribly frustrating to be a Liverpool supporter at the moment, but the aim before the season was after all to reach the Champions League again.
The easiest route to that is to simply beat Tottenham at Anfield next weekend. Then the reds will stand with 78 points, a number the white shirts may not be able to reach, regardless of how many games they win at the end of the season (Top 4 can also be secured if Tottenhan do not take three points against either Arsenal or Chelsea before next weekend’s game) .
A similar situation also applies before the match against Aston Villa in two weeks. Win or draw at Villa Park, the Birmingham club cannot catch up to Jürgen Klopp’s men. Surely this must go in the box?
Taking the rat out of Tottenham and giving them a proper revenge after the autumn’s controversial loss would taste very good, even if it may be a meager consolation in the big picture. We can hope that a week of rest and full focus on the training field can reverse the bad trend.
It is worth noting that Liverpool (+41) has a considerably better goal difference than Aston Villa (+21) and Tottenham (+16).
