Costa Rica’s Herediano advanced to the round of 16 of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup this Thursday by beating Toluca of Mexico 3-2, in the second leg of their first round series played at the Nemesio Díez stadium. .
It was the 5th minute when the ‘Red Devils’ of Toluca took a 1-0 lead with a shot by Mauricio Isaís on the edge of the six-yard box, following a pass from Uruguayan Maximiliano Araújo.
Herediano was saved from the second goal at 16 when goalkeeper Aarón Cruz blocked a shot by Paraguayan Robert Morales inside the area.
Before the break, at 45, Jesús Angulo appeared in the Herediano area to make it 2-0 with a powerful left-footed shot.
The Costa Rican squad got closer on the scoreboard with the score 2-1 at 57. After a counterattack led by Orlando Galo, Andy Rojas received the ball in the last quarter of the field, on the right sector, entered the area and scored a cross shot.
Five minutes later, Herediano tied the score at 2-2. Joshua Canales sent a serve from the left side and Francisco Rodríguez extended his right leg to send the ball into the goal. Both players had entered the game as substitutes a few seconds earlier.
The ‘Florenses’ turnaround came to fruition in the 83rd minute when Canales made it 3-2 by deflecting a volley from Aarón Murillo with his head. In this way, Herediano won the tie with an aggregate score of 4-3.
