SVWW benefits from goalkeeper errors at KSC

Audio End of audio post

SV Wehen Wiesbaden picked up a point at Karlsruher SC on Friday evening. Coach Markus Kauczinski’s team, with the kind help of KSC keeper Patrick Drewes, who conceded both goals, fought to a 2-2 (1-0) and collected a point in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Budu Zivzivadze (35th) and Eintracht loanee Igor Matanovic (53rd) scored for KSC. The SVWW equalized twice thanks to Ivan Prtajin (48th) and Nick Bätzner (74th). The Hessians are still eleventh in the second division table.

SVWW invites KSC to take a tour

The SVWW had to do without the match winner of the 3-1 win against Hertha BSC at KSC. Double goalscorer Franko Kovacevic was absent due to illness and was replaced in the starting line-up by Lee Hyun-ju. Otherwise, SVWW coach Markus Kauczinski trusted his victorious team.

However, there was almost no sign of the momentum from the previous week on the pitch. The Hessians never really got into the game in the first 45 minutes and deservedly fell behind. After Matanovic, who is on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the season, narrowly failed in the 23rd minute, Zivzivadze did better after an invitation from the SVWW defense.

The Georgian took advantage of a misunderstanding between Wiesbaden’s central defender Aleksandar Vukotic and keeper Florian Stritzel and slotted in from close range. Shortly before the half-time whistle, SVWW goalgetter Ivan Prtajin hit the crossbar (45.+3), but overall Karlsruhe’s half-time lead was completely okay.

First Prtajin scores, then Matanovic

Shortly after the break, the KSC presented itself as a good host and also handed out a gift. Goalkeeper Drewes allowed a harmless shot from Thijmen Goppel to go forward, Prtajin thanked him and scored to equalize. A goal that was good for the Hessians. The people of Wiesbaden became stronger – but were then taken by surprise again.

After a long ball, the Wiesbaden defense was once again not compact enough and gave Matanovic too much space. The 20-year-old underlined his goalscoring qualities and gave SVWW goalkeeper Stritzel no chance.

Bätzner accepts the second gift

In the final phase, the SVWW took a lot more risk, pushed for the equalizer and benefited again from a mistake by the KSC keeper. This time Drewes blocked a shot from Kianz Froese into the feet of Bätzner, who also gratefully accepted it.

Shortly before the final whistle, it briefly looked like a hand penalty for SVWW. However, the VAR rightly conceded the decision and thus caused the last notable scene of the game.
