Igor Pedin, 61, escaped from his home in Mariupol, the port city besieged by the Russians, and arrived in Zaporizhzhia after walking 225 kilometers, roughly the distance between Rome and Naples. Together with his faithful companion Zhu-Zhu, a nine-year-old terrier, he crossed the Russian-occupied territories in south-east Ukraine for days trying to “be invisible”.
