Prison authorities in Idaho, USA United States, they had to suspend the 73-year-old’s execution Thomas Eugene Creech, sentenced to death for five murders, because the medical staff, after numerous attempts, was unable to find the vein to carry out thelethal injection. As reported by the Cnn, the director of the Idaho Department of Corrections, Josh Tewalt, he said in a note that “the medical team was unable to find the vein to carry out the lethal injection, making it impossible to proceed with the execution”. “Mr Creech was taken back to his cell and witnesses were escorted out of the facility. Accordingly, the death sentence is expired”we read again in the press release.
Creech’s wasn’t from a isolated episode, indeed: it is only the latest interrupted execution in the United States of a long series. Many are suspended for the same reason, namely the inability to find the necessary vein. A situation that has pushed several American states to evaluate alternatives for capital punishment, such asof nitrogen breathed through a suffocation mask. Last January for example, the method was inaugurated in Alabama. When the murderer Kenneth Smith he was executed at Holman Prison in Atmore. Alabama has argued that the new protocol is the most painless and humane method used. But the human rights experts of the United Nations have a different opinion: they explained that the use of nitrogen can lead to a violent and painful death.
