WASHINGTON – No third dose of vaccine for Americans: a commission of the Food and Drug Administration rejected with 16 votes to 2 the proposed recall for people vaccinated against coronavirus with the drug Pfizer, instead approving it only for those who are 65 years of age or older or are considered to be at high risk, and received the second dose at least six months ago.
The indications of the committees are not binding on the FDA but are generally followed. The rejection of the third dose – the first indication of the recalls in the United States – was a major blow to the administration’s strategy. Biden, which wanted to make extra injections available to most fully vaccinated adults in the United States eight months after receiving a second dose as early as next week.
The members of the committee, writes theAssociated Press, appeared to be very determined on the presumed need for the recall for the population: the data provided by Pfizer and other experiments did not show that a third dose would have stemmed the spread of the infection. Some experts have also criticized the lack of data on the safety of an additional injection for younger people.
The final recommendation from the technicians, however, leaves some room for the White House to argue that the core of its support strategy has remained intact. Depending on the definition of “high risk,” tens of millions of Americans could theoretically be eligible for further injections of the Pfizer vaccine.
