HSV has returned to success under Steffen Baumgart. The Hamburg team beat SV Elversberg 1-0 (0-0) on the new coachās debut and reduced the gap to second-placed Holstein Kiel to one point.
Ransford Kƶnigsdƶrffer ensured a successful debut for Baumgart, who was introduced as the new coach of the second division soccer team last Tuesday, with his goal in the 53rd minute on Sunday afternoon. In the first game under the direction of the 52-year-old, the Hanseatic team showed a committed performance and deservedly defeated the promoted team. Northern rival Kiel (3:4 against FC St. Pauli) is now only one point away in the table ā and a direct promotion place is therefore within reach.
āWe have good boys and can play footballā
āI think there were a lot of things today that werenāt so successful before. First of all, there was the win, thatās one thing. Then we kept a clean sheet ā that hasnāt happened in a long time. And from my point of view, we had a lot too good actions. What I said before was also visible: We have good boys and can play football,ā said Baumgart in the NDR interview: āIām not only happy with the result, but also with how the boys are have worked.ā

Baumgart, like in Cologne times, with a flat cap
When Baumgart emerged from the belly of the Volksparkstadion shortly before kick-off, the HSV fans had just shouted his last name with great fervor. The 52-year-old wore sneakers, jeans, a black T-shirt with the inscription āMoinā and a flat cap with the diamond shape. The outerwear and headgear of the new man on the Hamburg command bridge in particular are likely to be a bestseller in the promotion candidateās fan shops in the coming days. The traditional club, which doesnāt exactly have a bed of roses financially, can look forward to a lot of āfreshnessā, as HSV icon Felix Magath likes to describe the despicable money.
Captain Schonlau celebrates his starting eleven comeback
Dressed similarly casually as Tim Walter, but unlike his predecessor without a water bottle in his hand, Baumgart watched his new teamās performance while standing. Compared to the game at FC Hansa Rostock (2:2) the previous week, there were three new players in the recovered captain and defense chief Sebastian Schonlau, central defender Dennis Hadzikadunic and outside attacker Kƶnigsdƶrffer.
Where it now said Baumgart, there was still a lot of Walter in it. As in the days of the recently fired coach, the Hanseatic team uncompromisingly sought the way forward from the start. The only visible difference in ball possession: the home team used the long ball stylistic device a little more often than before.
Kƶnigsdƶrffer and Pherai miss HSVās lead
The Hanseatic team knew how to please in the forward movement, even if many attacks in the final third lacked precision in the final pass or determination in the finish. Kƶnigsdƶrffer and Immanuel Pherai missed two good chances in quick succession in the fifth minute. They both failed because of goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. It was only much later that Kƶnigsdƶrffer had another significant opportunity for HSV. Once again, the Ghana national player found his master in the Saarland goalkeeper (34th).

Raab prevents a deficit shortly before the break
Speaking of the goalkeeper: For Hamburg, Matheo Raab once again stood between the posts for long-time regular goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes. Baumgart decided against another goalkeeper change, which Walter had made in his last game as HSV coach against Hannover 96 (3:4). And Raab justified the trust of the ābossā, as the new coach was called by the fans of his former club 1. FC Kƶln. The ball catcher prevented Semih Sahin from falling behind shortly before halftime (44ā²).
Elversberg had already come very close to taking the lead thanks to Paul Wanner, whose shot just missed the target (41st). The newcomer embarrassed the Baumgart team a few times after moments of change. The new coach was not able to completely eliminate the well-known weaknesses in retreating behavior within a few days, even if the North Germans were a bit more compact overall.
āYou could see that we wanted to defend as a team.ā

Kƶnigsdƶrffer completes a great attack
HSV was warned, initially acted a little more cautiously after the break and was rewarded for this approach. After an Elversberg attack was intercepted, the home team switched quickly against the advanced Saarlanders. The ball came to Robert Glatzel via Bakery Jatta, who passed the ball deep to Kƶnigsdƶrffer. The left winger penetrated the penalty area irresistibly and beat Kristof with a hard and well-placed shot into the near corner ā the lead.
Seven minutes later, the 22-year-old ran towards the SVE keeper again, but shot the ball over the goal in distress. Shortly afterwards, Kƶnigsdƶrffer was substituted for midfielder Anssi Suhonen. In addition, Lukasz Poreba got a āsixā for creative power Ludovit Reis (64th each).
Elversberg with a late chance to equalize
Due to the double personnel swap, HSV was now a little more defensively oriented, but it did not retreat at all, but rather tried to maintain control of the ball and thus the game. This worked well until the final phase. But then Elversberg almost equalized after a corner kick that landed on Hugo Vandermerschās head. Raab parried magnificently (88th) and ensured that Baumgart started the āAscent Missionā with a victory.
āAnyone who knows Steffen knows that he brings incredible energy. Heās just a guy, you can tell he lives for football. He can give you self-confidence and he has a very clear idea for the game. I think you have that āWe also saw it today,ā said Schonlau, praising the coach with whom he had already worked successfully at SC Paderborn.
