Qatar 2022 qualifiers: Belgium-Wales –

by admin

Martinez’s men have won 15 of the last 16 official matches: the two national teams have not faced each other since the 2016 European Championships, with the victory of Bale and his teammates in the quarter-finals

In Europe, it is time to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. From each group, of five or six teams, there will be a team directly qualified for the world cup, or the first classified. The runners-up will compete in the playoffs alongside the two best Nations League teams that failed to qualify directly for the World Cup. In group E we start with Belgium-Wales: Belarus, the Czech Republic and Estonia complete the group. Kick-off on Wednesday 24 March at 8.45 pm on Belgian soil.

PREVIOUS

The two national teams last met at the 2016 European Championships in France. Portugal raised the cup, but Wales was certainly among the surprises of the tournament: Bale and his teammates reached the semifinal and managed to eliminate Belgium in the quarterfinals, reversing the advantage signed by Nainggolan with Williams, Robson-Kanu and Vokes. The Welsh also prevailed in the penultimate match, on 12 June 2015 in the qualifiers for Euro 2016: 1-0 in Cardiff with a goal from Bale. Belgium’s last success dates back to 7 September 2012: 2-0 away with goals from Kompany and Vertonghen. From that moment two draws and two defeats.

THE MOMENT

Roberto Martinez’s team has won the last three games played in the Nations League (against Iceland, England and Denmark) and in the last sixteen official games (considering the Nations League and European qualifiers) they have won fifteen times and lost only on one occasion, against England on 11 October 2020. Wales also achieved excellent results in the Nations League, qualifying in first place in their group of League B: 16 points in six matches, with five wins and a draw at Ireland.
