Arvedi, here is the plan for Ast with a focus on hydrogen and production relaunch

Acciai Speciali Terni looks to the future with investments of one billion euros in plants, returning to produce also the magnetic sheet, and with the prospect of achieving decarbonisation in the medium term by focusing on green hydrogen power. The industrial plan by Arvedi – presented yesterday to the institutions and workers by the president of the group Giovanni Arvedi, by the CEO of Finarvedi, Mario Caldonazzo, and by the plant manager and member of the board, Dimitri Menecali – largely confirms the indiscretions of the recent weeks and finds the full approval of the trade union counterpart.

Uilm: A plan that can be successful

«After years of uncertainty and unsatisfactory management by Thyssenkrupp – said at the end of the meeting Guglielmo Gambardella, Uilm national coordinator for the steel industry, and Simone Lucchetti, general secretary Uilm – this industrial plan has all the characteristics to be successful. Uilm wants to take up the challenge of the Cremona group for the industrial and occupational development of Ast which, however, must be followed by the growth of the overall well-being of the workers “. The two workers’ representatives consider it “essential”, however, given the complexity of the investments “an effective and / concrete commitment of local and national institutions in reducing the time of administrative procedures linked to authorizations of the necessary works, starting from the Program Agreement” , recalling that “unfortunately already in the past we have seen the brake of the bureaucracy on the development of the country”.

Fim Cisl: a project that looks to the future

Positive evaluation also by the national secretary of the end cisl, Valerio D’Alò. “Like Fim – he said – we positively evaluate the plan, not only for the purpose of relaunching even those production pieces that had been lost or decreased over time, but also above all because it is a plan that looks to the future, already speaking of hydrogen and green steel. Arvedi also spoke about energy sustainability referring to the need to resort to supplies from renewable energy. In short, a plan that looks to the future and to a green and sustainable production of steel. Now – he concluded – it is important in this process of relaunch and investments that everyone does their part and above all that the institutions and bodies: both local and national, facilitate all those regulatory and authorization processes that must accompany a plan of this scope. Fim will do its part and will be attentive to investments but also to the needs and requirements of a company such as Ast that is strategic for the entire country, like the entire steel sector and a community that sees the steel mill as a driving force of the work and well-being of one’s own territory “.

Tesei: very important for the Region

In this regard, the president of the Umbria Region, Donatella Tesei, she declared herself available «to any path to create those enabling conditions that can carry on this project of extraordinary importance both for Terni and Umbria. Now we need to accelerate on the table for the program agreement, an instrument that allows the Government, the Region and the company to move forward on all fronts “. According to Tesei, the Arvedi group presented” a very important industrial plan “. Also present at the meeting were the regional councilor for economic development, Michele Fioroni, and, via videoconference, the mayor Leonardo Latini. “Cavaler Arvedi has very clear ideas, so his project that will take shape over the years still sees very important priority interventions on environmental sustainability” added Tesei, saying she was “satisfied” with the meeting. “There are some things that need a little longer times than the measures adopted immediately – he continued -, which serve to further enhance the Terni site, to optimize its performance and to introduce those famous legs that have come less over the years “. The president underlined that «Arvedi has confirmed that he will maintain the level of employment; then, if in the future there is the growth we hope for, there will also be other prospects. The Region will be there “he concluded, reiterating his willingness, as far as the institutions are concerned,” to create the conditions so that the Arvedi group can operate at its best in Umbria “.

Production estimates

In detail, the plan, which aims to bring production to 1.5 million tons at full capacity, it foresees investments in a new Sendzimir cold rolling mill for galvanizing, a new bright annealing line, which are accompanied by a new pickling and annealing line for stainless steel. The new finishing complex for magnetic steel will, according to forecasts, occupy 50,000 square meters. Finally, the investment in a new slab heating furnace with hydrogen-methane combustion is planned.
