One strategy that can work for suppliers is that of so-called last-man standing. Financial investors are aiming for consolidation in order to meet the reduced demand for combustion technology – and to make profits by focusing on size and greater efficiency. “It remains to be seen whether this strategy will be successful in the medium term,” says Engelhardt. The financial investors in question are only now in the process of developing their platform strategy and transforming companies. “It is clear that with overall reduced demand from car manufacturers, only those who have quality and costs under control will prevail.”
